Darjeeling tea (botanically known as Camellia Sinensis), is a hardy evergreen bush that grows up to 2.5 metres in height. The bush matures within 4 to 6 years and is known to produce tea leaves of same quality, aroma and flavour for over 100 years. It takes over 20,000 individually hand-picked shoots to produce one kg of fine tea.
Darjeeling tea, is grown at an altitude of over 3200 ft at the foothills of the Himalayas in India and is that of finest qualities in the world. The unique agro-climatic conditions give the brew a light colour infusion and the muscatel flavour.
Darjeeling tea, is grown only in Darjeeling, India and cannot be grown, manufactured or replicated anywhere else in the world. To protect the authenticity, Darjeeling tea was granted the Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2003 in India and in 2011 by the European Union. The Tea Board of India (Government of India agency) has developed the DARJEELING logo consisting of the word Darjeeling and a representation of an Indian woman holding tea leaves, as a seal of authenticity.
